SUMMARY:Beyond Election Year: People of Jesus’ Kingdom
DESCRIPTION:Due to unforeseen circumstances\, we are unable to move forward with our upcoming event as planned.\nWhile this change is disappointing\, we remain deeply committed to serving pastors and leaders in the DC area and look forward to finding another opportunity to gather soon. Thank you for your understanding\, and please don’t hesitate to reach out if there’s any way we can serve you in the meantime. \nHosted by the Matthew 5:9 Fellowship\, the Center for Christianity and Public Life\, and the Dream Collective\, this gathering on April 10 at the Capital Turnaround in Washington\, DC\, offers space for reflection and practical guidance. Michael Wear\, author of The Spirit of Our Politics\, will share why spiritual formation is essential in public life\, and the Matthew 5:9 Fellowship will lead a workshop on peacemaking in an era of polarization. \nIn a time of uncertainty\, we invite pastors\, lay leaders\, and Christian ministry leaders to step away from the pressures of the moment and re-center on the deep peace of Jesus’ Kingdom—so that they may return to their communities as people of shalom\, prepared to lead with clarity\, conviction\, and love. \nPlease note: Lunch will be provided for free and all attendees will receive a free copy of Michael Wear’s book\, The Spirit of Our Politics.   We look forward to seeing you there! SUMMARY:Presidential Debate Watch Party: Vanguard University
DESCRIPTION:Vanguard University Presidential Debate Watch Party \nCosta Mesa\, CA \nVanguard University will dedicate 2024 as its “Year of Civility.” Likewise\, the Matthew 5:9 Fellowship will work with Evangelical pastors\, leaders\, and laypeople across the nation to help them cultivate the kind of peacemaking posture Jesus calls us to in the Beatitudes. Vanguard Professor of Political Science Dr. Eunice Kang and Vanguard’s Student Government Association will partner with the Matthew 5:9 Fellowship to hold a presidential debate watch party where students will identify instances of toxically polarizing rhetoric between the candidates. \nAbout 100 students are expected to attend to learn more about how to become aware of politically divisive language\, be more resilient in the midst of it\, and\, therefore\, exercise civility and peacemaking as followers of Christ. Several local radio stations and The Daily Pilot will also cover the debate watch party.

SUMMARY:Navigating the Divide
DESCRIPTION:It is easy to see conflict in the church as a problem to be solved rather than an opportunity for discipleship and relational closeness. It is easy to see conflict outside the church as a battle to be won rather than an opportunity to understand the hearts and perhaps wounds of those who don’t see the world through the lens of Jesus – especially during an election season. \nWhat might it look like for you to engage in conflict/culture/elections differently? Join us as we discuss these concepts and enjoy a time of food and fellowship together. Attendance is free\, but we need you to register! \nAgenda (subject to flexibility)\n10:00 – Introduction\n10:30 – Session One: Conflict Transformation\n12:00 – Lunch – Catered by Cactus\n12:30 – Session Two: Transcending Political Polarization\n1:30 – Closing

SUMMARY:Returning from Sabbaticals Strong
DESCRIPTION:Over the past few years\, a large proportion of American pastors have gone on sabbaticals. For many\, it was a much-needed break from a long\, polarizing season of ministry. But how do we come back from sabbaticals in a healthy way? How do we apply what God has taught us during our time away? And how do we resist the pressure to “make up” for lost time? \nOn Tuesday\, August 1\, 2pm-3:30pm ET\, we are hosting a special one-time event titled Returning from Sabbaticals Strong. Curtis Chang\, the executive director of Redeeming Babel\, and Dave Harvey\, the president of the Great Commission Collective\, will be serving as online panelists\, and we are excited to hear them share their experiences and provide practical takeaways. \nCurtis Chang bridges the worlds of secular institutions and theology. In the former world\, he is the founder and CEO of Consulting Within Reach (CWR)\, a firm serving nonprofits and government agencies. His consulting work has won an award in social innovation from the Obama White House\, and he teaches strategic planning as a faculty member of American University’s School of International Service. \nIn the Christian world\, he is a consulting professor at Duke Divinity School and a Senior Fellow at Fuller Theological Seminary\, as well as a former senior pastor of an Evangelical Covenant Church in San Jose\, California. He is the author of the book The Anxiety Opportunity: How Worry Is the Doorway to Your Best Self. Curtis lives with his family in San Jose\, CA. \nDave Harvey is the president of Great Commission Collective\, a church-planting ministry in North America and abroad. Dave was a pastor for 34 years\, and he travels widely across networks and denominations as a conference speaker. \nDave is the author of When Sinners Say “I Do”\, Am I Called?\, and Stronger Together: Seven Partnership Virtues and the Vices that Subvert Them. In a previous role as the Executive Director of Harbor Network (formerly Sojourn Network)\, Dave also oversaw the publication of the church network’s how-to books\, including a book on sabbaticals. Dave and his wife\, Kimm\, live in southwest Florida\, and he writes at RevDaveHarvey.com. \nContact Larry Lin at larry@oneamericamovement.org if you have questions. \n\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Digital Discipleship: Equipping Pastors and Leaders
DESCRIPTION:Most of us have a love-hate relationship with technology. We love all that it promises to give us\, but hate how much it controls us. We lament how our congregations are discipled more by social media and cable news than by Scripture. Is this a hopeless battle? \nWe need to understand the present digital landscape with both its dangers and its opportunities. We know that social media informs and mis-informs us\, but we do not always consider the ways it also forms and mal-forms us\, our churches\, and our society. On Thursday\, June 8\, 8:30am-2:30pm\, join us at Cherrydale Baptist Church in Arlington\, VA\, for a special one-day conference titled Digital Discipleship. Come learn\, discuss\, and share best practices about how Christians can live purposefully in our digitally-saturated society and how we can disciple the new generation of digital natives. \nDr. Felicia Wu Song\, Professor of Sociology at Westmont College\, has taught about the internet and its effect on society to college students for over twenty years. Bringing insights from theology\, sociology\, and the lived experiences of her students\, Dr. Song\, author of Restless Devices\, will help us examine our own digital lives and how we can disciple others in this rapidly changing environment. \nR. York Moore serves as the President\, CEO\, and National Evangelist of the Coalition for Christian Outreach. Having garnered 700\,000 followers on TikTok\, Moore will guide us in discussing and understanding “digital citizenship” and Christian mission in our social media ladened age. \n\nREGISTER HERE
